Research in Food and Nutrition in the University of Barcelona [HUBc, Campus of International Excellence]
Research in food and nutrition fields in the University of Barcelona is distributed between those activities carried out by the department labs and those undertaken by other research structures (centers and institutes). Among these entities, and apart from the Nutrition and Food Safety Research Institute (INSA-UB), we find groups which belong to the Institute of Biomedicine of the UB (IBUB), the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) and the Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL).
Institutional Interactions in R&D
Research in Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus basically has to build on the research teams transferred to the research laboratories. Nonetheless, the project strategy places great emphasis to the fact that a very important part is meant to be developed by INSA, whose Direction headquarters will be located in the same spaces. The creation of a multidisciplinary research as a result of the aggregation of different groups should be a Campus' key point, complemented by the multiple activities carried out by the groups of the INSA and which are not allocated to the campus' laboratories. Likewise, the presence of teams coming from other institutes and the relation with the university hospital's investigators has to entail a complement for the promotion of those activities and projects born in the campus. It is necessary to stress in a significant way the IBUB and the investigators of the IDIBAPS and the IDIBELL. Besides, the food and health sectors are linked to reference hospitals, like Sant Joan de Déu in the pediatric nutrition field.
Furthermore, and revolving around this productive sector, it is worth to highlight the necessary coordination between the Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (transfer), the Scientific and Technological Centers of the Universitat de Barcelona (technological offer) and the Barcelona Science Park (with the Toxicology platform).
It is also necessary to emphasize the coordination between the research performed by the campus and the different departments, particularly the ones attached to the Faculty of Pharmacy and which today are a true reference in the sector, such as the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology. All this without forgetting UB's wealth regarding the several distributed groups that form this family.
HUBc, UB's health campus
The HUBc, one of the Spanish Campuses of International Excellence that have been recognized by the Ministry of Education (2010), is promoted by the University of Barcelona to put together an aggregation of actors in the health field, mainly hospitals and research institutes. It gathers four teaching centers and six hospitals spread across different campuses, among which we can find the Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus, which stands out in those aspects related to human nutrition and dietetics and food science and technology.
