Lecture rooms & laboratories
Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus provides its students with the best facilities, materials and working technologies, along with extraordinary environmental conditions, so as to reach the maximum efficiency in the time they spend in the campus. In the same vein, all students are given the customary technological conveniences which facilitate the personal learning conditions by means of UB's Virtual Campus, added to the resources channeled by the Resource Center for Learning and Research (CRAI).
In this respect, it has been reinforced the implementation of a series of spaces to put students in contact (leisure rooms, reading rooms, computer rooms, a bar-restaurant and also smaller dining rooms suited for those student carrying lunch boxes), supporting spaces for the participation in the design of campus' activities (Representative's Office and the Student Observatory) as well as tutoring spaces.
In top of all this, the campus has a large number of different kinds of lecture rooms, whose uses range from hosting master classes to other free-structured activities with reduced groups, as well as seminar rooms. These teaching spaces are currently spread across the campus' buildings in order to tie traditional learning to other particular activities held in the many buildings this campus has at its disposal. With the object to periodically organize meetings, roundtables or conferences with experts or guest personalities, La Masia offers Les Voltes conference hall, with a capacity of approximately 200 people and an adjacent exterior space of outstanding quality. This space is coordinated by the local administration of Diputació de Barcelona, and allows the celebration of a wide variety of events such as expositions and other activities with an active civic participation, as is the case of ExpAliments.
The campus expansion project, following the agreement signed between UB and Diputació de Barcelona and inserted within the framework of the Special Plan for the campus, envisages the construction of a brand new lecture building in the southwest area of the Torribera site, with the goal of making possible more studies to be held in the campus. This building, financed by Diputació de Barcelona, will account for one third of the total academic activities and has a ten-month implementation period from its start. It is expected to be fully operative during the 2014-2015 course.
Finally, this project brings a new way of valuing the experimental learning in laboratories and other spaces, after the arrangement several rooms equipped with different technologies which favor the gaining of practical skills.
Overall, about 8.000 m² of quality spaces are made available to students in order to make the learning process easier.

Computer rooms addressed to students are found in the administration building (La Masia), the teaching laboratories building (Marina) and the teaching and student services building (Verdaguer). This service is set to cover the needs of both students and the whole university community, providing the most commonly used work software, Internet access with a high-speed network and also the possibility of using a high-quality printing service at low costs.

A series of multipurpose spaces have been created in order to host all types of working meetings or to serve just as a resting environment for the different groups within the university. They are smaller rooms with all the necessary elements to serve in working rendezvous (Wi-Fi coverage, projector, computers...) or useful commodities for the resting areas (fridge, microwave oven...).
Teaching laboratories building (Marina)
University of Barcelona puts at the disposal of all its students in Torribera a set of spaces intended for practical training grouped into a single 3.468 m² building. The model applied allows that students, throughout their undergraduate and postgraduate studies, attend all specialized labs, which have all the appropriate instruments and techniques to familiarize them with the different aspects of the academic programs. This comprehensive organization gives students a broader and more transversal vision on the matters under study.
Mission, vision and objectives
The primary mission of campus administration, with respect to the activities hosted in the teaching laboratories building, is to manage the lab rooms and the other specialized spaces intended to practical training in an enabling environment that promotes the achievement of a wide ranging knowledge by the students.
The vision this campus wants to portray to both the university community and all professional corporations is that it represents a reference hub in the food and nutrition fields, as well as a model of integrated practical training which adds values in such aspects as quality, food safety and risk prevention and health and environmental management.
Among our principal aims is to make this model afford students the chance to gain more competences so that they can acquire a true transversal practical experience, which will help them to get familiarized with experimental working methods. Thus, all the system is conceived to facilitate student's access to the professional world.
Management of the Building and its academic activities
The Teaching Laboratories Unit (ULD) of the Faculty of Pharmacy, in conjunction with the Campus administration, assumes the coordination, monitoring and quality control of all academic activities held in the teaching laboratories building.
The management model regarding the training laboratories in Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus is based upon the former experience by the Teaching Laboratories Unit (ULD) of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UB, created in 1998 in response to the summary document of the evaluation synthesis and proposals for improving the degree programs. This document recommended developing and applying a quality management system for the laboratories within the faculty. The implementation of this new management scheme has supposed the design of new teaching laboratories, a better supervision of their regular use and eventually a complementary study to optimize economic administration.
Quality
The proposed model wants to improve learning quality, since students acquire the practical skills for the different subjects in a scenery in which all quality and security standards are observed with environmental criteria that can be compared with those the student will find later in the world of work.
In order to assess the efficiency of the process; that is, attainment of the continuous improving targets in practical learning, it is necessary to develop indicators for a proper monitoring of the results obtained, thus enabling the appropriate corrections to be done (Regulation UNE-EN ISO 9001:2000).
Strategy
The strategy of the teaching laboratories building by means of the Teaching Laboratories Unit (ULD) is to maintain and improve the management of the total quality system established. The Unit will ensure the resources and maintenance of the facilities and technical equipment, as well as the appropriate documentation for the activities carried out in the laboratories of the building. Campus' Management will make sure that it has all necessary personnel and that its staff is given the appropriate training as the main agents to pipeline this strategy.

The teaching Laboratories Unit (ULD) also provides other spaces to support practical academic activity, such as a tutoring room, a teaching staff room, a student's leisure room, warehouses, regular classrooms and technical and maintenance rooms.
Building Structure:
Acquisition of competences and basic skills
1. Learning ability and responsibility in the decision-making under different experimental circumstances. Analytical and synthesis skills, as well as the application of knowledge in the lab.
2. Ability to work in teams and to cooperate with interdisciplinary groups in a laboratory. Real problems in the food sector demand an interdisciplinary approach.
3. Capacity for risk analysis in experimental work and for developing the competences related to risk prevention. Capacity to manage the waste generated during laboratory works.
4. Ability to evaluate the environmental impact of their activities and look for suitable treatment models which minimize their negative effects.
5. Capacity to search for recycling models intended for the re-use of food technologies' byproducts.
6. Capacity to draw social consequences (social impact) from all the activities revolving around food processing.
Acquisition of competences and specific skills
1. Ability to know and select, in every moment, the best procedures and analytical techniques.
2. Ability to differentiate between nutritive and non-nutritive food contents, and to acquire the skills necessary for being able to carry out a sensorial analysis of the products.
3. Capacity to identify pathogenic microorganisms for an industrial use and their applicability conditions: favorable or not in industrial and biotechnological processes.
4. Ability to know those agents which may alter food state, and also how to prevent these alterations from taking place. That is, the main principles of food safety.
5. Capacity to know the conditions in which a microorganism can take part in any functional application having to do with food biotechnology.
6. Ability to identify those potentially toxic chemicals and know the contamination effects on food.
7. Capacity to take active part in the processing and transformation of food.
8. Capacity to acquire basic knowledge in chemical engineering related to food treatment.
