Research in Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus

Lorem ipsumFood and Nutrition Torribera Campus has a 2.178 m² fully-operational building devoted to research, with specialized labs in nutrition and bromatology, chemistry (organic and inorganic), biochemistry and molecular biology, cellular biology, applied nutrition, microbiology and several scientific services among which are found twelve research groups. Most of them come from the faculties of Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry and Medicine, can be either rising or already well established and are part of the Nutrition and Food Safety Research Institute (INSA) of the UB. Is in that vein that, after an understanding with the Research Vice-Rectory, the Direction and the Secretariat of the INSA have been located in the same building, with the object to develop a double function: internally, to bind all promotion regarding the research done in the campus and, externally, to manage the aggregation of research associated to the institute from other faculties. Likewise, outside this building there are other research teams, such as the Food Observatory (ODELA), located in the teaching and student services building (Verdaguer) and which comes from the Faculty of Geography and History, or the Bioinformatics and Molecular Modeling Group.

Research has a huge importance for the campus development and that explains the existence of plenty of teaching activities geared to this scope, carried out simultaneously by both professors and investigators transferred to Torribera. However, it must be recognized as well that, in an initial stage, building sizes are a relevant limitation. It is a fact that UB's strengths in the food and nutrition fields are quite scattered around several faculties, whereas a comprehensive conception is necessary when it comes to research activity. UB's wish nonetheless is to turn Torribera into a true reference outwards. The interdisciplinary nature of the research hosted in the campus can't make us forget the key role played by research teams from the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology that, for space reasons, have not been able to deploy a complete reorganization. In some cases these groups have only been able to move to the campus' research building (Gaudí) a part of their total potential. Furthermore, research in those fields linked to food is not limited only to INSA, but there are also other centers or research institutes of the university or the CERCA which bring investigators and research teams in this field of action.
