International mobility Food Campus: meeting students and researchers.

During October there was the " International Students Welcome Session " to the students and visitors currently on the Food Campus Torribera in different international mobility programs (Erasmus, Ciencia Sin Fronteras (Brasil), Leonardo (Italy), ... ), doing academic topics or as a junior researchers in consolidated groups from the Campus.

The meeting was organized by the International Mobility responsible for the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Dolores Serra Cucurull and the Delegate in the Food Campus, Dr. Joana Relat, attended the Director of the Campus, Dr. Marius Rubiralta, the head of Administration Quim Luque, and head teachers of Science and Food Technology, Dr. Mari Carmen Vidal and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Dr. Susana Buxaderas.

During the session, the students expressed their reasons for choosing the UB during their period of international mobility and their personal opinions on how they lived their arrival in the country and their incorporation in the Campus.

María Julia Gonçalves Barbosa, from Brazil (Programme "Science without Borders"), a fourth-year nutrition student at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where since her first year in college has a scientific initiation scholarship to work in research in the area of epidemiology, indicates: “Sí, la Universidad de Barcelona fue mi primera opción. He escogido la UB pues tuve indicaciones de personas que la conocían y también porque entre las opciones, la ciudad de Barcelona me interesaba más para vivir. En el segundo semestre de 2012-2013 escogí asignaturas de nutrición (Nutrición y Actividad Física e Interacción Alimentos y Medicamentos) y de CTA (Gestión y normativa alimentaria). Las elegí pues eran en castellano, me interesaron bastante y porque puedo aprovechar sus créditos en mi país. Este semestre he elegido una asignatura en biología (Epidemiologia), pues es muy interesante para el área de investigación que trabajo en mi país, porque la universidad está más cerca del piso que vivo y por también ser en castellano. También estoy haciendo un trabajo dirigido en Torribera en el laboratorio de Química Orgánica, con la Dra. Cristina Minguillón”.

Once a quick visit to the sports facilities the group ate at Restaurant Torribera located within the sports complex.

Kees Fluitman, from the Netherlands, with a very good level of Catalan, comes as undergraduate HAVO (Dutch level) from University of Groningen, having made a year studying to be a teacher (Hanze Hogeschool Groningen) and two years of Philosophy (Bachelor), which now in the third year is doing a "minor" for a semester. Asked by J.R. told us about their expectations: “He vingut aquí perque la meva nòvia ha volgut venir. Ella és de Suïssa, i perque és una oportunitat de saber si la relació entre nosaltres pot funcionar. He triat les assignatures de Biologia Cel•lular i Genètica, Química general i inorgànica, i Bioquímica perque estic interessat en la filosofia de la ciències i vull alguns coneixements més. A més m'agrada cuinar i pensar què és bona nutrició i què és mala alimentació. Com estan relacionats els hàbits alimentaris amb la vida diària i tot”.

How do you live the situation of the Campus (J.R:)?: “Visc a Gràcia, vol dir, a prop...Avinguda de Pompeu Fabra. Hi ha coses positives i negatives del Campus de Torribera. És maco, confortable, però lluny i difícil d’arribar-hi amb el bus. Aquí no es gestionen els problemes amb tanta de pressa com a la meva universitat. Crec que, quan pugui entrar a la biblioteca o tenir un carnet, ja hauré de tornar als Països Baixos. Vosaltres sabeu quins eren les meus problemes amb la matrícula. Una mica més de comunicació pot ser millor.”

Flayanna Gouveia Braga, a Brazilian pre-graduate student in Food Engineering from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) has come to the UB under the "Ciencia Sin Fronteras" Spain-Brazil cooperation program. On the choice of Barcelona as a destination she answers us: “La Universidad de Barcelona fue una de mis opciones, porque es considerada una gran universidad de su país, pero no fue mi primera opción, porque Barcelona está situada en la región de Cataluña y pensé que iba a tener dificultades para entender las lecciones, las clases y la comunicación, siendo esta la razón principal de no haber sido la primera opción. Para resolver ese problema, estoy haciendo un curso de catalán que me ha ayudado a entender mejor el idioma. He escogido como asignaturas Bromatología I, Seguridad alimentaria I, Control de calidad de los procesos y productos, Química de los Alimentos.”

What other activities do you do? (J.R.) “Al principio tomé únicas asignaturas, pero ahora voy a participar también en un trabajo en el departamento de microbiología en la Facultad de Farmacia, un hecho que me hace muy feliz porque veo la oportunidad de adquirir más conocimientos en el área que ya estaba operando en Brasil y lo suficientemente gusto a trabajar. Estoy aquí por un año que puedo prorrogar por un trimestre más”.

Where do you live and how have you lived your incorporation to Campus? (J.R.) “Estoy viviendo en Santa Coloma de Gramenet cerca de la universidad. Me encanta el campus de Torribera y como es un nuevo campus creo que sólo tiende a mejorar. Creo que a veces hay problemas de comunicación entre las personas que participan en el programa, pero creo que es normal porque es un nuevo programa. Veo este intercambio como una gran oportunidad para el crecimiento personal y profesional, así que me siento privilegiada de participar. También me gusta el lugar que estoy viviendo, estoy aprendiendo sobre una nueva cultura, una nueva lengua, en definitiva, una nueva vida que me gusta más cada día.”

Federica Baldini, comes from Italy, is a graduate in Pharmacy at School of Pharmacy from di Sapienza-Università since last February 28, 2013. She is currently in a postgraduate exchange italian program for six months in the laboratory of Dr. Cristina Mingullón, which is interested in instrumental aspects to improve chromatography. She lives in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and explains: “At the moment it's all over my expectation: the accommodation, the lab, the country, the food... My internship is for 6 months (October to March). Now I live in Santa Coloma and I think it's a very nice place. Not too far from the sea; people are very kindly. And I love this weather. I can’t talk about my work here because it has not begun yet. So maybe in a month I can have some idea about the Campus and the University”.

Nina Meyer-Weidemann, student from German (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kie) land included in the Erasmus program has been critical to the welcome and host system that has made the University of Barcelona and therefore the Campus to the Interantional students who have joined us this September. In her opinion, It would have been important for them to know the Campus before the start of classes, as well as who was the responsible for the program and the operating system of our teachings (classes start dates and times, evaluation systems, academic potential, language programs ...). By now, fully integrated into the Campus states she is enjoying her stay with us and she only expects we will improve the negative aspects for the next arriving students.

In order to facilitate the understanding of the area where the Campus is included and because our international students value the advantages of being very near of the city center (about 15 minutes by metro) but having more chances of knowing thing out of the normal tours we presented a program of social and cultural activities for them and in some cases extended to all the members of the Campus (students, PDI and PAS). Dr. Joana Relat has organized a set of outgoings that have been started with a presentation of sports facilities located in Torribera (October 31th, 2013) accompanied by a welcome lunch.

Then we invited our students to a walk to the Monastery of San Jerònim of Murtra, near Torribera at the basement the Serralada de Marina (November 12 th, 2013).
