We use phytosociology as a first step in the ecological knowledge of plant communities. Then, we study more thoroughly different vegetation units, mostly herbaceous and shrubby communities related to limiting or singular habitats, such as Pyrenean snowbeds and fens, alpine heaths, or littoral marshes.
Concerning the phytosociological studies, we aim to improve the knowledge of the Catalan vegetation through analysing less known areas or syntaxa. Our recent activities mainly concern Pyrenean areas (Aigüestortes, Cadí, Andorra), though we also treat Mediterranean areas (both mountains and littoral plains). As for the ecological aspects, most of our studies are referred to the high mountain, focusing on the variations occurring in ecotones, such as the timberline and the areas of snow beds or fens. In some of these areas we have set permanent plots to record plant and environment variations through time. We have also worked in homologous vegetation found in high latitudes (Scandes, Tierra del Fuego).
