Convent of Carme
Convent of Carme, the University’s temporary home after 1838. Engraving published in Ferran Soldevila: Barcelona sense universitat i la restauració de la Universitat de Barcelona (1714-1837). University of Barcelona, 1938, page 177.
Once the university had been re-established in the city, the building that housed its various parts in 1841 was the Convent of Carme, which had recently been seized by the State and the nuns evicted. The centre provisionally housed the major faculties of Theology, Canon Law and Law and, later the Faculty of Pharmacy. Its gradually deteriorating condition forced the State authorities to commission the architect Elias Rogent to design a new building in 1859.
