The AcousA project is a comprehensive study aimed at advancing the understanding of motor speech impairments in patients with Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD). The project focuses on developing robust phonetic measures and tools for the automatic analysis of speech affected by FTLD in Spanish and Catalan. By building on existing research in English, the study will identify reliable acoustic markers, such as speech rate, pause duration, and rhythmic metrics, which are indicative of the disease. The study involves both FTLD patients, recruited from Hospital Sant Pau, and healthy controls, who will undergo a comprehensive speech protocol. This protocol includes the production of sustained vowels, repetition of syllables and pseudowords, reading phonetically balanced texts, and spontaneous speech tasks. The recorded data will be manually annotated and analyzed using a combination of acoustic and statistical methods, with the goal of identifying phonetic markers of FTLD. The project will culminate in the creation of an annotated corpus of FTLD speech, as well as the development of an automatic speech analysis tool. This tool will enable physicians to predict the underlying pathology of FTLD, aiding in early diagnosis and improving patient outcomes. The ultimate aim is to develop a rapid, reliable speech test that can be used in clinical settings to support ongoing care for patients with FTLD.
