At a time when universal exhibitions were at the peak of their popularity, the Mayor of Barcelona, Francesc Rius Taulet, took on the challenge of organizing the city's Universal Exhibition in 1888. The architect Elias Rogent was the architectural director of the Exhibition and he was aided by other outstanding architects of the age. The Exhibition was opened on 20 May 1888, in the presence of the Queen Regent Maria Cristina.
