Social responsibility at the UBSince it was founded in 1450, the University of Barcelona (UB) has been committed to fulfilling its role as a public university at the service of society and the nation. The year 2009, however, marked the decisive step when the values of social responsibility were formally incorporated into the daily management of the University. In order to integrate a concern for social responsibility into the management of an institution, it is necessary to see the institution as part of a wider environment in which its activity has an economic, social and environmental impact. As a result, mere compliance with legal obligations is not enough. We need to seek the greatest well-being of all agents that interact with the UB. In keeping with this viewpoint, the University is committed to ensuring that our actions have the most positive effects possible on each agent that our activity touches. In the language of the sector, those agents whose work depends on the activity of the institution are referred to as stakeholders or interest groups. In the case of the UB, the principal stakeholders are our students, the administrative and service staff (AdSS), the teaching and research staff (TRS), Catalan and Spanish society, the public administration, the business sector and our network of suppliers.
