11-03-2016

According to the results of a study commissioned by the Port of Barcelona and prepared by the AQR-Lab Applied Economics Laboratory of the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with Turisme de Barcelona, the sector allows to maintain near 7,000 jobs.

The activity of the cruises of the Catalan capital generates a total turnover of 796 million euros and contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Catalonia with 413.2 million euros per year. The study, presented by the President of the Port of Barcelona, Sixte Cambra; the director of the Laboratory of AQR-Lab of the University of Barcelona and professor of Applied Economics, Jordi Suriñach; With the presence of the general director of Tourism of Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, the direct impact of the main agents involved in the activity of the cruise, the indirect and induced impact, as well as the catalyst effects of the sector in the economy In this way, the report reveals that the direct expense derived from cross-border activity amounts to 442.5 million euros per year, which is divided among three main spending agents: shipping companies (121.2 million); Passenger cruises (315.8 million) and the crew (5.5 million). As a result of this initial expense, an indirect and induced turnover of 353.5 million euros is generated, which places the total turnover of the cruise activity in 796 million euros.

With this study, the group AQR-lab of the UB highlights that this volume of activity supposes a contribution of 413,2 million euros to the GDP of Catalonia and allows to maintain 6,759 places of work. In addition, it generates fiscal revenues of 152 million euros in state and autonomous taxes and tourist taxes. The Catalan capital is the main beneficiary of this activity, since 75% of the total effect remains in the city of Barcelona (313.4 million euros of contribution of the GDP and 5,039 jobs, in absolute terms).

The President of the Port, Sixte Cambra, highlighted the relevant contribution of the study "to assess the true economic and social dimension of a traffic that has acquired great importance in recent years as a generator of investments, employment and activityeconomic".

In order to expose these figures more exhaustively, the study details that the arrival of cruises to the Port of Barcelona implies a daily turnover of 2.2 million euros in Catalonia (of which 1.7 million in the city of Barcelona). That is, each cruise that makes a stairway to the Port of Barcelona generates, on average, a total turnover of one million euros; It contributes with half a million euros to the GDP of Catalonia and allows to maintain 9 jobs (7 of which in Barcelona). In addition, each cruise ladder contributes 200,000 euros to tax revenues (VAT, IRPF and Corporate Tax).

Therefore, we can conclude that the activity of cruises of the Port of Barcelona:
  • It generates an annual turnover of 796 million euros in Catalonia (2.2 million daily).
  • It contributes to the GDP of Catalonia at 413 million euros.
  • It generates 152 million euros of tax collection.
  • It allows you to maintain almost 7,000 full-time jobs.
  • Provides connectivity of flights to Barcelona airport and economic stability in other sectors of the city.
  • Not only does it benefit the sectors related to tourism but also with other industrial and service sectors.
It corresponds to a cruise profile that normally travels as a couple, with a great interest in knowing the city and is a good prescriber (90% want to return and recommend it to friends and acquaintances).
