AQR-Lab analyses the impact on the Catalan economy derived from the tourism crisis by COVID-19
The study, carried out by the Departament d'Empresa i Coneixement of the Generalitat de Cataluna, measures the forecast of the evolution of the tourism sector in the short term (summer 2020) and medium term (end of 2020) using the basic indicators: spending, employment and number of overnight stays.
In summary, it is anticipated that this year 2020, the direct invoicing of the tourist sector will fall about 15,000 million euros.
On the other hand, the evolution of the tourist activity by sectors is also analysed, in this sense, the volume of business of the companies will decrease between 24.1% and 25.7%. Specifically, in accommodation and catering establishments it will drop above 42%; in air transport, more than 50%; in the travel agency sector, between 47% and 52%; and in the organization of conventions and fairs, the drop will be above 62%.
Finally, it is also expected that the Gross Added Value (GVA) generated by all the companies linked to the tourism sector will decrease in Catalonia between 7,700 and 9,200 million euros. This value would have a direct effect on the global GDP of Catalonia of between -1.5 p.p and -2.0 p.p. (percentage points).
