Publication of the Monograph "Francesc Tosquelles. Curar les institucions"
The monograph Tosquelles. Curar les institucions (Arcàdia, 2021), written by Joana Masó (ADHUC-Universitat de Barcelona) has been published. Francesc Tosquelles (1912-1994) was a Catalan republican psychiatrist who, after leaving Institut Pere Mata for the years of the Republic and working at the front, exiled himself to France at the end of the Spanish Civil War. Tosquelles lived in Saint-Alban until the late sixties, carrying out transformative work at psychiatric hospitals which responded not only to therapeutic but also to cultural and political needs in a process which involved the care institution itself. The opening of hospitals around Saint-Alban, the bond with the surrounding landscape, the exploration of cooperative management systems with the inmates, the work done both within and outside the centers, the artisan production, and the practice of theatre, cinema and literature as collective activities were some of his proposals in the care process aiming to humanize those treated at the institution. Through a wide selection of texts by Tosquelles and of documents and photographs, Joana Masó proposes a journey which illuminates a collective memory beyond a history of psychiatry and its institutions, and which has been made possible by the research project "El llegat oblidat de Francesc Tosquelles", funded by Fundació MIR-PUIG.
