The slides in the Historical Archive of the Geography Department are organized in several collections. The oldest collection is that of the Lantern Slides, which compiles images from the 1930’s. For many years these pictures were kept on glass, and today they constitute a heritage of Geography teaching in the University of Barcelona. They represent an exceptional photographic material not only for their historical value, but also for the quality of the pictures and the worldwide variety of landscapes shown.
For these reasons the Lantern Slides Collection was granted preferential treatment over the other collections of the Archive, with an easy interactive access to the images through our website.
The publication of the Lantern Slides Collection in the “Digital Archive” of the University of Barcelona comprises additional information. The collection includes an introductory text, which describes among other things the use of the Lantern Slides in teaching. Also, the original images are accompanied by current pictures and aerial views of the places shown on the slides.
