Of Heroes and Victims: Jess Walter's The Zero and the Satirical Post-9/11 Novel
The doctoral candidate Dolores Resano, researcher in training at the Centre ADHUC-Teoria, Gènere, Sexualitat, will defend her doctoral thesis directed by Elena Losada Soler and Cristina Alsina Rísquez (ADHUC-Universitat de Barcelona) titled "Of Heroes and Victims: Jess Walter's The Zero and the Satirical Post-9/11 Novel". Her thesis explores the discursive apparatus mobilized in the United States after the 9/11 attacks from a rhetorical and narratory point of view, through the analysis of a novel whose purpose is the interaction with, representation and eventual subversion of a nationalist discourse supported by the appeal to foundational myths and cultural themes of high acceptance among the American population. Drawing on the notions of satirical carnival, dialogism and intertextuality, the thesis revisions the theoretical corpus on narrative satire and proposes its renewal through Mikhail Bakhtin's theories of carnivalization, in order to demonstrate how understanding satire in this way is especially suitable for constructing a dialogical, polyphonic and inquisitive story that not only questions but also dialogues with the American nation.
