The PhD candidate Katarzyna Paszkiewicz, pre-doctoral researcher at the Centre Dona i Literatura - Gènere, sexualitats, crítica de la cultura, will defend her doctoral thesis, supervised by Helena González Fernández and Marta Segarra and titled "Gender y genre en las cineastas estadounidenses a principios del siglo XXI". Her dissertation analyzes a number of filmic works directed by three American women directors (Karyn Kusama, Kelly Reichardt and Kathryn Bigelow), which have been perceived in critical discourse as genre films. The objective behind this thesis is to reflect on how these filmmakers, by taking as a starting point the conceptualization of genre as a process, a repertoire or a constellation of cultural, aesthetic and ideological materials, use the genericity of filmic storytelling to engage purposefully with past forms, at the same time as they contribute to remaking and shifting social imaginaries, especially in terms of gender representation.
