Female homoeroticism in Spanish collections of erotic newsstand literature (1898-1936)
The Seminar Philosophy and Gender-ADHUC organizes the 35th Thesis Lab. In this new session, the doctoral student María I. Naranjo Ruiz (ADHUC-Universitat de Barcelona) will present the work she is doing for her thesis project, under the direction of Isabel Clúa (ADHUC-Universitat de Barcelona).
The present research aims to offer an approach to the cultural and literary representations of Sapphics in the erotic novel collections that proliferated in the Spain of the Sicalipsis and the Green Wave (1900-1936). Starting from the Sapphic archive and studies on queer materiality, we will organize a journey that will begin by locating both the Sicalipsis and the Green Wave in the fields of cultural and literary history, paying special attention to the phenomenon of novel collections and other specific aspects such as sexual science or the birth of modern queer subcultures. After this introduction, three chronologically organized epigraphs will follow, focusing on different types of literary syzygyptic lesbians: the cupletist/artist lesbian, the lesbian as a transcript of the Modern Woman, and the transformist lesbian. The focus will then turn to the author and reader of lesbian-themed erotic novels, concluding with an analysis of the depletion of the serial literary genre, the end of the cultural phenomenon of the sapphic woman, and the pathological crystallization of the lesbian during the 1930s.
Virtual session with limited capacity. Registration in advance, by order, by sending an e-mail to: adhuc@ub.edu until September 18.
