Women and literature. Turkish women writers in the 19th and 20th centuries
Universitat de Barcelona
Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 585, 08007 Barcelona
The application for the new university extension course “Women and literature. Turkish women writers in the 19th and 20th centuries” is now open. The course will be given by Nesrin Karavar (ADHUC) and organized within the training activities developed by the UNESCO Chair Women, Development and Cultures at the University of Barcelona.
Turkish literature remains largely unknown in our country, but literature written by Turkish women is even less well known. However, this situation has nothing to do with its quality, since these works would arouse a great deal of international interest if they were written in other contexts. Thus, this course is born from the need to shed light on an excellent literature that should receive the recognition it deserves.
Contemporary Turkish literature is mainly a post-war literature written after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, in 1923. This course intends to offer basic training in the evolution of this literature, from the background of Ottoman times to the latest works, which combine the most sophisticated techniques from European “modernity” with the literary tradition of “oriental” roots. The corpus explored in the course stands out for its literary quality, and the formal and stylistic analysis carried out in the sessions will offer a broad overview on the Turkish social reality, as well as on the characteristics of Turkish feminist movement(s).
The course will take place at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona from January 11th to February 17th (2022), on Monday and Wednesday from 15h to 17h. The course has a price of 100 € and is recognized as a university extension course (2 ECTS). For further details, please contact nesrinkaravar@ub.edu.
