Call for Papers: Other Perspectives in Archaeology “Erased from the past”
Under the broad theme “Erased from the past”, we aim to give much needed visibility to forgotten people and subjects, which have been traditionally marginalized. Although some case studies, such as the social role of women and the history of minorities, are not alien to the academic community, we offer a space in which to rethink and discuss our discipline, so new approaches and ideas can be shared to a broader audience.
The Other Perspectives in Archaeology (OPA) conference will take place in the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona the 29, 30 and 31 March 2023. The event will have the broad theme of “Erased from the past”, which encompasses any archaeological subject
including, but not limited to:
● Invisibilized social approaches (Gender studies , childhood, elderly, the disabled, etc)
● Archaeology of social, ethnic, cultural and religious minorities
● Geographically/physically isolated human communities
● Economic activities deemed “secondary” or “marginal” by ancient/modern scholars
Proposals from all disciplines of Archaeology and any historical period are welcome as long as they assess any of the aforementioned subjects. Papers can be presented in English, Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. In order to encourage the discussion of new approaches and perspectives, preference will be given to early career scholars.
To adapt to the reality of the post-pandemic era, the conference will be held in person, but with the understanding that economic and health issues might be an important deterrent for young scholars, we will give the possibility to watch all the interventions remotely. However, all participants must present their paper in person.
The organisation of the conference is exploring the possibility of offering travel bursaries for some participants. Preference will be given to postgraduates and PhD students without institutional funding. If you wish to apply for the bursary, please say so when you submit your proposal. Similarly, the Organising Committee is exploring the possibility of publishing an edited volume on the subject of the conference in order to make the AWMC a more fruitful event and to give the participants an opportunity to further disseminate their work.
Proposals should be presented in the following form by 24th October 2022.
