IRBio receives the financing for four biogenome sequencing projects of Catalan species
Within the framework of the third call for grants for biogenome research in the Catalan Biogenome Project (CBP) initiative, promoted by the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) together with two of its subsidiary societies, the Catalan Society of Biology (SCB) and the Catalan Institution of Natural History (ICHN), with the aim of contributing to the knowledge of the biodiversity of our environment.
This new call is aimed at financing projects for sequencing reference genomes of a wide taxonomic range of eukaryotic species, in accordance with the quality standards of the Earth Biogenome Project. And on the other hand, it is also aimed at the sequencing of those samples collected in previous calls.
The Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio) has stood out in this call with four approved projects to sequence the genome of eukaryotic species from the Catalan territory, reaffirming its commitment to research into Catalan biodiversity and its importance for the scientific and environmental development of the region.
Modality A: Projects aimed at sequencing already collected samples
- Project 1:
- Principal investigator/consortium coordinator: Maria Cinta Pegueroles Queralt
- Species(s): Xerocrassa montserratensis, Tylodina raffinesqui
- Participating centres and amounts requested: University of Barcelona; National Centre for Genomic Analysis (CNAG).
- Project 2:
- Principal investigator/consortium coordinator: Francesc Múrria i Farnós
- Participating centres: University of Barcelona; National Centre for Genomic Analysis (CNAG).
Modality B: Projects aimed at sequencing genomes of other eukaryotic species without a reference genome
- Project 3:
- Principal investigator/consortium coordinator: Jesús Lozano Fernández
- Title: CtenoGenomes: Analysing the genomic diversity of Mediterranean comb jellies (Ctenophora)
- Participating centres: University of Barcelona; National Centre for Genomic Analysis (CNAG); CNRS-UPMC.
- Project 4:
- Principal investigator/consortium coordinator: Raül Ramos Garcia
- Title: The genetic basis of migratory behaviour in shearwaters of the genus Calonectris
- Participating centres: University of Barcelona; University of Milan; Polytechnic University of Le Marche (Ancora, Italy).
This new call for grants represents an important opportunity to advance scientific research in the Catalan territories and contribute to their development and well-being. The approved projects cover a wide variety of species and areas of study, highlighting the diversity and richness of biogenome research. Genomic research has the potential to offer innovative tools for the conservation and management of natural resources, ensuring the preservation of Catalan biodiversity for future generations.
