Paleomagnetic Laboratory (CCiT UB- ICTJA CSIC)

The Paleomagnetic Laboratory of Barcelona was established in 1989 from the agreement between the CSIC and the Geological Survey of Catalunya (Generalitat de Catalunya). From 1998 the laboratory depends on the Scientific and Technologic Centers (UB) and the Institute of Earth Sciences “Jaume Almera” (CSIC).

The laboratory mostly collaborates with Earth Sciences research groups. Its main research lines are:

  1. Magnetostratigraphic dating of sedimentary sections applied to basin analysis, biochronological calibration, paleoenvironmental evolution...

  2. Paleomagnetism applied to the study of orogenic belts and plate tectonics

  3. Archaeomagnetic dating of archaeological remains

  4. Environmental magnetism applied to the study of climatic and paleoenvironmental changes in the sedimentary record.

Equipment

  1. Superconducting rock magnetometer SRM755R (2G Enterprises)

  2. Spinner magnetometer JR6A (Agico)

  3. Thermal demagnetizer TSD-1 (Schonstedt)

  4. Thermal demagnetizer MMTD80 (Magnetic Measurements)

  5. Alternating field (AF) demagnetizer GSD-5 (Schonstedt)

  6. AF Demagnetizer D-Tech 2000 (ASC Scientific)
