The quality of research done by the previous Centre Mixt d’Investigació Geomodels and the current Research Institute have determined that the oil company Statoil has recognized the Geomodels Research Institute as a Centre of Excellence in research since 2007. The agreement has served to promote research in new areas and has provided the Institute with a new laboratory of Analogue Modelling, along with a Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)

The GEOMODELS Research Institute, is a part of the Universitat de Barcelona since 2008. This Institut is the result of the work done since 2005 by the previous Centre Mixt d’Investigació GEOMODELS. This previous research center was promoted in the early stages thanks to an agreement signed between the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the geological survey of Spain Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME) and Generalitat de Catalunya.

The main objectives of the Research Institute are developing and spreading new concepts, tools, and workflows to improve the understanding of geological systems, specially, those systems that are relevant to humans in terms of mineral resources, ground-water, and geohazards.

The Geomodels Institute integrates experts from different disciplines, mainly geoscientists, engineers, physicists and mathematicians. This structure gives the Institute the needed interdisciplinarity to achieve our goals.
