Statistics claim that Spanish teachers and professors are today better paid than anywhere else in Europe. The claim may well be true if attention is paid only to income, disregarding other nonetheless essential matters such as work conditions, associated social status and recognition, work facilities, etc. What is worse, if compared with football stars', professors' income can well be said to be miserly, as is their current social status. In our day, it is common knowledge that entertainment outdoes culture. There was a time, however, when the sage enjoyed both great social status and large incomes. The paper herein presents an estimate of the value granted by the Greeks in classical Greece to culture, the means to spread it and Greek impromptu teachers. [Download full text]
