Measuring the lifecycle impact of welfare state policies in the face of ageing

The Economic Analysis and Policy journal just published an article showing the results of the microWELT model from WELTRANSIM project. These results will be extended to WELLCARE including time transfers.

Highlights

  • Simulations of income redistribution, at both intra and intergenerational levels.
  • Significant differences in the life cycle impact of welfare policies across Europe.
  • Parents privately transfer substantially more than childless people. Public transfers only compensate for this gap in some countries and education levels (Austria low and medium educated and UK low educated)
  • Public transfers are highly redistributive among the three educational groups.
  • Only the high educated are net payers of lifetime public transfers.
