Centre for Microsimulation and Policy Analysis, Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) – University of Essex
The Centre for Microsimulation and Policy Analysis (CeMPA) leads the field in microsimulation, bringing together the expert team at ISER with colleagues from specialisms across the University of Essex, including Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Sociology and Economics. Originally established in 1989 at the University of Essex to house the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), ISER has grown into a leading centre for the production and analysis of longitudinal studies. It encompasses the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change and the successor to the BHPS, Understanding Society. As well as providing unrivalled postgraduate study opportunities, ISER also houses an internationally renowned Microsimulation Unit which develops and runs the tax and benefit model, EUROMOD.
Principal Investigator
Prof. Matteo Richiardi
CeMPA Director and a labour economist, primarily interested in research on inequalities and insecurity, unemployment, and income, within a life course perspective. He focuses on using large-scale survey and administrative micro-data, and microsimulation techniques and computational methods to investigate these topics. The Centre for Microsimulation and Policy Analysis (CeMPA) is based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), University of Essex. CeMPA evolved out of the original team responsible for the development of the microsimulation model EUROMOD, and now leads the field in microsimulation. CeMPA includes experts with diverse specialisms across the University of Essex, including Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Sociology and Economics. Analysis at CeMPA benefits from a long tradition of micro-data analysis at its host institution, ISER.
