Intensive A1 Catalan courses: September 2025
A1 (Basic 1)
As part of the UB’s Catalan language and cultural reception programme, the Language Services organizes intensive Catalan courses for beginners for students from outside Catalonia who are planning to do a placement or course of study at the University of Barcelona during the academic year 2025-2026.
These 30-hour courses cost 25 euros each for UB students and can be validated for academic credits (ECTS credits). Each course includes two cultural activities:
- A gastronomic activity.
- An activity related to a Catalan festivity or tradition.
Registration opens on 6 June 2025 and you can register online by going to the link next to the course you want or in person by visiting us at the Language Services office.

Where are the courses taught?
All the intensive face-to-face courses are taught in Barcelona’s city centre, very close to Plaça de la Universitat:

Virtual Campus20 + 10 hours Dates Video conference Examination modality From 30 September to 30 October 2025 Tues and Thurs, 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Face-to-face Enrolment Online Enrolment This course comprises 20 hours of teaching via video conference and 10 hours of independent learning via the Virtual Campus. The exam will be held on 4 November 2025, in both face-to-face and online examination modalities.

Conditions
- We reserve the right to cancel a course if the number of enrolments fails to reach the minimum number required to run a class. (Note that if we do cancel your course for this reason, you will be reimbursed.)
- Each class has a maximum number of students and enrolment closes once that number is reached.
- You need to pay the course fees at least one week before the course starts.
- If for any reason you can’t do the course, write to sl.catala.inicial@ub.edu and tell them, as soon as you can. That way, someone else can have your place!
- Once you have enrolled, you may not change groups without the express authorization of the course secretary.
- In order to obtain all the ECTS credits available for doing a course, you need to attend 80% of the classes and pass the final examination.
Online examination modality
Students sit the exam online and are monitored by remote proctoring software.
Technical requirements for the online exam:
- A computer with Windows, Mac or Linux, plugged into a power outlet.
- Google Chrome browser. Safari is not supported.
- A webcam and microphone, either built-in or connected to the computer.
- Built-in or external speakers connected to the computer. The use of headphones is not allowed.
- A stable internet connection, preferably via Ethernet cable.
- Installation of the remote proctoring software Smowl (provided free of charge).
- A University of Barcelona Zoom account (provided free of charge).
- A mobile device (phone or tablet, Android or iOS) with a video camera, plugged into a power outlet and connected to the internet.
- A quiet, well-lit environment that will be free of interruptions during the exam.

- Screen monitoring
- Room scanning
- Audio monitoring of the room
- AI-based supervision with human validation

Purpose of data processing
To manage the Catalan course you have enrolled in.
Lawful basis
The lawful basis is the performance of a task carried out in the public interest (Organic Law 2/2023, of 22 March, on the University System and Law 1/2003 of 19 February governing Catalan universities).
Period of data storage
Data will be kept for the period necessary to fulfil the purpose for which they were collected and to determine any possible liabilities that may be derived from them.
Recipients
The companies Langoo IO, S.L. and Smiley Owl Tech, S.L., who have been contracted to manage the platform through which the exams and proctoring will be carried out, respectively, will process the personal data under the responsibility of the University of Barcelona, as data processors. Data will not be disclosed to third parties unless there is a legal obligation to do so.
Data subject rights
You may exercise your rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction of processing, and portability at any time by submitting a written request to the General Secretary’s Office of the University of Barcelona, by post (Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 585, 08007 Barcelona) or by email (secretaria.general@ub.edu). You will need to attach a photocopy of your Spanish ID document (DNI/NIE) or other valid ID.
