The Seminari Filosofia i Gènere—ADHUC organizes the 35th Thesis Laboratory. In this session the PhD candidate María I. Naranjo Ruiz will present the work she is doing for her thesis project under the direction of Isabel Clúa Ginés (University of Sevilla). Naranjo is a FPU researcher of the research group Escritoras y Escrituras (HUM753) of the University of Sevilla.
The purpose of her research is to offer an approach to the cultural and literary representations of the sapphic in the collections of the kiosk erotic novels that proliferated in the Spain of Sicalipsi and the Ola Verde (1900-1936). Starting from the sapphic archive and the studies on queer materiality, the presentation will begin by placing both the Sicalipsi and the Ola Verde in the fields of cultural and literary history, paying special attention to the phenomenon of novel collections and other specific aspects such as sexual science or the birth of modern queer subcultures. After this introduction, three epigraphs will be followed, organized chronologically and focused on different types of literary sicaliptic lesbians: the cupletist/artist lesbian, the lesbian as a copy of the Modern Woman and the transformist lesbian. Then, the attention will be drawn on the author and reader of lesbian-themed erotic novels, concluding with an analysis of the depletion of the literary genre of the ‘serial’, the end of the cultural phenomenon of the sapphic woman and the pathological crystallization of lesbians during the 1930s.
The session will be held online. It is recquired previous registration by sending an email to adhuc@ub.edu to attend. It should be made before September 18th. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
