The Philosophy and Gender Seminar was created in November 1990 at the University of Barcelona, on the initiative of professors and researchers from the departments of History of Philosophy, Aesthetics and Philosophy of Culture (Faculty of Philosophy) and Greek Philology (Faculty of Philology).
This center was promoted by the GRC Women Creation and Thought, which includes the following groups: the Centre Dona i Literatura-Gènere, sexualitats i crítica de la cultura, the Filosofia i Gènere Seminar, and Tàcita Muta-Grup d’Estudis de Dones i Gènere a l’Antiguitat. Helena González Fernández is the Director, and its research members are from the University of Barcelona, as well as the University of Lleida, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – CNRS (France), Hamilton College (USA) and the Università del Salento (Italy).

This GRC consists of three Universitat de Barcelona research groups with a long and highly productive trajectory in the study of women and gender: the Centre Dona i Literatura-Gènere, sexualitats i crítica de la cultura (Faculty of Philology), the Filosofia i Gènere Seminar (Faculty of Philosophy), and Tàcita Muta-Grup d’Estudis de Dones i Gènere a l’Antiguitat (Faculty of Geography and History). These three groups have joined together in order to promote the interdisciplinarity of their research in the fields of literature, cinema, art, and philosophical thought, since Antiquity and until the 21st century. The Grup d’Investigació Consolidat Creació i Pensament de les Dones (CiPD) was founded in 2005 and is officially recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Ref. SGR2005/00246).

The Filosofia i Gènere Seminar has kept a close relationship with de María Zambrano Seminar (University of Barcelona), directed by Dr. Carmen Revilla, for many years. Samples of this relationship are to be found in the annual seminars and the publication of the magazine Aurora. Papeles del “Seminario María Zambrano”, published by Publicaciones y Ediciones de la Universidad de Barcelona. The most active member of the Seminar, other than its director Carmen Revilla, is Dr. Rosa Rius Gatell. Dr. Elena Laurenzi is also a regular collaborator of the Seminar.

The Filosofia i Gènere Seminar has established and developed highly productive relationships with numerous Spanish universities (Granada, Málaga, Sevilla and Aula Interdisciplinar Isabel Torres de Estudios de las Mujeres y del Género of the Universidad de Cantabria), European universities (Florence, Siena, Verona, Padua, Salerno, Toulouse-Le Mirail), and international Research Centers (CNRS, New School University, or associations such as the IAPh). Such collaborations are confirmed by the participation in conference cycles which can be found within the activities section in this same website, as well as by the publications and the participation in committees.
The Seminar presented Barcelona’s candidacy as the venue for the 10th Symposium of the International Association of Women Philosophers (Internationale Assoziation von Philosophinnen). The Symposium took place in Barcelona, at Centre de Cultura Contemporánea, in October 2002, under the title “Passion for freedom”. The Congress Proceedings were subsequently published.
