Hannah Höch: Artistic and Philosophic Practice during the Republic of Weimar

The Seminari Filosofia i Gènere-ADHUC organizes the 32nd Laboratori de Tesi. In this new session, PhD Andrea Pérez Fernández (Seminari Filosofia i Gènere—ADHUC) will present the work he is carrying out for the thesis project Hannah Höch: Artistic and Philosophic Practice During the Republic of Weimar, under the supervision of Àngela Lorena Fuster Peiró (Seminari Filosofia i Gènere—ADHUC, Universitat de Barcelona) and Maria-Josep Balsach i Peig (Universitat de Girona).

In this research, Pérez Fernández addresses the political commitment of the German artist Hannah Höch (1889-1978) during the years of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933). Known for her participation in the Berlin Dada movement, Höch is one of the pioneers in the development of the photomontage technique. But her legacy also includes a handful of stories, articles and interviews, among other textual sources, barely heeded by critics. The analysis of these texts allows Pérez Fernández to shed light on the way in which Höch conceives the link between art and thought, and to assess to what extent a specific political commitment follows from it.
