Big Data for Economics to be addressed by Prof. Arthur Charpentier at 2018 Summer School
The 2018 edition of the UB School of Economics Summer School will look at Big Data problems from an Economic perspective. The choice of this year’s topic reflects the profound effect that the data revolution is having on economic research. Course participants will analyse why Big Data is an important issue for applied economists and will learn several computer based techniques. Professor at the University of Rennes 1 Arthur Charpentier will be the main instructor of this programme, which will take place in Barcelona from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th July 2018.
The deadline for applications to join the 2018 Summer School class is June 17th 2018. However, master’s and PhD students who apply for one of the five scholarships available covering tuition fees must send their application before May 31st, 2018. Full-time postgraduate students and recent graduates may also benefit from a reduced student fee. Candidates are advised to apply as early as possible in the applications cycle, as the Summer School programme has limited seats and a rolling admission process
The course is useful for all economists, who now see how the availability of large-scale administrative and private sector data challenge the way they have conducted empirical analysis. Today, no economist can avoid acquiring a basic knowledge of the large-data statistical methods that have been developed in neighboring fields and that are likely to substitute most classical econometric techniques. Big data is likely to affect the types of questions economists pose, by allowing for more focus on population variation and the analysis of a broader range of economic activities and interactions.
