News | 09-10-2024

The jury has distinguished his poetry collection Las ignorancias among more than 2,000 participants from 39 countries

The professor of Latin Philology and dean of the Faculty of Philology and Communication, Javier Velaza, has won the Loewe Prize for Poetry for his poetry book Las ignorancias, a work that delves into the impossibilities of knowledge in the classical world. The jury, which has considered Velaza's work as one of the most relevant works of contemporary poetry, has been formed by Víctor García de la Concha, who served as president, and Gioconda Belli, Antonio Colinas, Aurora Egido, Raquel Lanseros, María Negroni, Juan Antonio González, Carme Riera, Jaime Siles, Luis Antonio de Villena and Diego Roel, winner of the last edition.

Velaza, who described the award as an "extraordinary" honor, explained that the work focuses on the ignorant condition of the human being and is based on the three axioms of the philosopher Gorgias. "Nothing exists, if something existed it would be unknowable, if something existed and were knowable it would be incommunicable." For his part, the award for Young Creation has gone to Omar Castro for his book Habitación persona sola.

The Loewe International Poetry Prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in Spanish-language literature. In this XXXVII call for the award, 2,260 originals from 39 countries have been submitted, of which 55% come from Latin America. In addition, 39% of the participants are Spanish, mainly from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante. Of the participants, 26% are under 33 years old. The awarding of the prizes and the presentation of the works, which will be published by the publishing house Visor, will take place in March 2025.
