The Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics, with the support of the Department of Hispanic Philology, Theory of Literature and Communication, have proposed to Gimferrer on the initiative of Professor Jordi Marrugat

The Catalan poet, translator and literary critic Pere Gimferrer i Torrens (Barcelona, 1945) will be invested doctor honoris causa by the University of Barcelona, at the proposal of the Faculty of Philology and Communication. The initiative has been promoted by Professor Jordi Marrugat of the Catalan Philology and General Linguistics Department and has been supported by the Department of Hispanic Philology, Theory of Literature and Communication (see the proposal drawn up by the Department).

Gimferrer, a pioneer in several fields

Pere Gimferrer is recognized as a pioneer not only in the creative field but also in the studies of Baroque, Modernism, the avant-garde, the generation of 27 and the relations between literature and cinema. His texts on Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies are especially notable, but he has also influenced his own works in later poets. A student of Law and Philosophy and Letters at the UB, he developed his humanistic career in literary creation, independent study and the publishing world. While not pursuing a career in academics, he has always maintained intellectual ties with the university. He won the Premio Nacional de Poesía and joined the Real Academia Espa.ola in 1985.

The value of the honorary doctorate

The University of Barcelona has approved to distinguish the poet and essayist in the Governing Council of 12 July 2023. Honoris causa is the highest distinction that the University grants to a person in recognition of their merits and career in the academic, scientific or cultural field, of their values and of their special attachment to the UB. It will be the first time that a university has awarded this honor to Gimferrer.
