The Faculty of Philology and Communication expresses its condolences on the death of Professor Carme Junyent, a reference in the study of linguistics

Recognized with the Creu de Sant Jordi of the Generalitat de Catalunya for her commitment to the Catalan language, Junyent also promoted the Study Group for Endangered Languages of the Faculty of Philology and Communication

The Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona expresses its condolences for the death of Dr Carme Junyent i Figueras (1955-2023). Professor of the Degree of General Linguistics at the University of Barcelona, she carried out extensive research in the field of endangered languages, linguistic anthropology and immigration languages in Catalonia.

A specialist in minorization processes and immigration languages, he gave numerous courses and lectures. She is the founder and director of the Endangered Languages Study Group (GELA) and the Diversity Languages Group (GLiDi). Junyent developed a long career of scientific outreach in the area of endangered languages, substitution processes and values of linguistic diversity, especially in the field of education, in which he contributed over the years with various publications and a large number of conferences, seminars, talks and training in the centers.

Junyent was a member of the committee of experts consulted for the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Language Rights (1996) and was a member of the International Scientific Committee of Linguamón – House of Languages. He was part of the founders of the Revista d'Igualada, of which he was a member of the editorial board since 1999. He also directed the realization of the inventory of languages spoken in Catalonia, which currently exceeds 300. Also, she was the curator of the exhibitions "Les llengües a Catalunya" and "Les llengües dels catalans".

An articulist with a significant media presence, Junyent was the author of an extensive production on the situation of the world's languages and linguistic diversity. Recently, she had published books such as The Future of Catalan Depending on You (2020), Catalan, the language efervescent: 77 visions on the ground (2021) and We are Women, We are linguists, We are many and say enough (2022).   

In 2019 she was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi for her long career in the study and defense of linguistic diversity in Catalonia and the world. Later, in 2021 he also received the Distinction of the Doctors Cloister and the UB Social Council.

The Faculty of Philology and Communication joins in the expressions of condolences expressed by the loss of Professor Carme Junyent i Figueras.
