#CICEvent | Conference by Juan Antonio Bayona

Published on 17 July, 2024

"Always make the best possible movie," this is the goal of film director Juan Antonio Bayona, who gave a talk on June 20 at the Faculty of Philology and Communication.

In a classroom full of students and professors, the filmmaker shared anecdotes and experiences from his career. "An idea that is in almost all my movies is realizing how lonely we are and finding a way to bear that up." He recalled that his passion for cinema comes from long ago because his father was a cinephile. "When I could start going to the cinema alone, a world opened up for me. I would go see all the movies."

The director also gave his opinion on the effect of streaming platforms on attendance at movie theaters, stating that platforms have brought cinema closer to many people, but that "when a movie is interesting, people get up from the couch to go see it in the cinema." Finally, he reflected that sometimes it is advisable to say no "because a career is also built on renunciations."
