The European Prison Observatory is a project coordinated by the Italian NGO Antigone and developed with the financial support of the European Union’s Criminal Justice Program.
The European Prison Observatory studies, through quantitative and qualitative analyses, the condition of national prison systems and related systems of alternatives to detention, comparing these conditions with relevant international norms and standards for the protection of the fundamental rights of those detained. The European Prison Observatory highlights to European experts and professionals the "good practices" existing in different countries, both for prison management and for the protection of the fundamental rights of inmates. Finally, it promotes the adoption of CPT standards and other international legal instruments on detention as a fundamental reference for the activities of the available national monitoring bodies.
