Welcome form the dean

Welcome from the dean

It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the many members of our university community: students, teaching and research staff (PDI) and administrative and service staff (PAS). We open the doors of the Faculty of Nursing to give you all of the information about how it is structured, how we are organized, and the many services we offer.

Looking briefly to the past, the history of the current Faculty dates back to the 1977 when, under Royal Decree 2128/1997, university studies in nursing, taught until that year at the former School of Technical Healthcare Auxiliaries of the Faculty of Medicine, were officially constituted as a university diploma course. From that moment, the University School of Nursing became part of the University's core academic structure.

Some time later, during the academic year 2016-2017, the University carried out a structural reform, as part of which the University School of Nursing was integrated into the Nursing Training and Research Unit in the new Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Finally, on 24 April 2023, the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia published Resolution REU/1303/2023, of 13 April, establishing as of the academic year 2023-2024 the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Barcelona as an official centre in the University's academic structure.

The bachelor's degree in Nursing is taught on two campuses: the Bellvitge Campus and the Clínic Campus. The administrative office is located on the Bellvitge Campus, where there are two buildings: the Pavelló de Govern and the Aulari classroom block. The Clínic Campus has two buildings: the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Ramon Llull building of the Escola Industrial. Students on the two campuses have the chance to carry out low-, medium- and high-fidelity simulation, together with a range of other learning activities, in specialized clinical teaching rooms.

The Faculty currently teaches the bachelor's degree in Nursing and three university master's degrees: Leadership and Management of Nursing Services, Advanced Nursing Clinical Practice, and Applied Research Methodology in Nursing Care. Students are also offered a doctoral programme in Nursing and Health. The Faculty also teaches several lifelong learning master's degrees. On the Bellvitge Campus, students enrolled in the University of Experience can take the university programme in Health Sciences, for learners aged fifty-five and over.

Our students benefit from the added value of studying at a uniquely positioned Faculty in the major international rankings, recognized as the leading Catalan and Spanish centre of nursing education in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking. It is also the Faculty with the largest number of bachelor's degree students in Nursing, being home to 31.5 % of the total number of nursing students in Catalonia. Annual student satisfaction surveys show that a high percentage would choose both the degree and the Faculty again.

We have a significant impact on teaching, research and innovation in our area of specialization. The Faculty is fully committed to engaging with the community around us, transferring knowledge between the academic world and wider society. As part of this commitment, the Faculty takes part in the Programme on Social Policy and University Access, the Prometheus Programme, and the Barcelona City Council's UniMentor Programme for university social volunteering in service learning. It has signed collaboration agreements with five university hospitals, 11 affiliated centres, 51 primary care centres, seven social-healthcare centres, and a number of mental health centres.

The Faculty values the internationalization of its teaching staff and students and encourages involvement in the Erasmus European mobility programme, which the degree has formed part of for several years.

The Faculty is home to more than 1,500 bachelor's degree students, over 120 university master's degree students, more than 80 doctoral students and some 450 lifelong learning master's students.

In the area of research, the Faculty has more than 100 researchers and approximately 385 lecturers (full-time and part-time). The PDI are involved in the work of several consolidated research groups and in the Faculty's own emerging research group. They also contribute to the work of two consolidated teaching innovation groups.

The Dean's team, the collegiate bodies and all members of the Faculty community (students, PDI and PAS) work hard to achieve the standards required by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU), striving for continual improvement in every area of our activity.

We aim to be a leading, forward-looking faculty, open to engagement with the university sector and the professional world (associations, organizations and professional colleges) across Spain and internationally.

We hope that this website will help you learn more about the Faculty, whether you are already studying with us or, more importantly, if you are thinking about applying for one of our programmes or would like to know more about our research and other activities.

I invite you to visit us and get to know the Faculty better.

Chair of the Management Committee
