Research
The University of Barcelona is one of Spain’s top research universities. According to the 2011 Ibero-American SIR Ranking, it generates more scientific output than any other Spanish university. It ranks second in the country in terms of number of publications, after the Spanish National Research Council, and 23rd in the European ranking of institutions by number of citations (Second European Report on S&T Indicators, 1997). In addition to research groups, the UB is organized into research centres and institutes, and it participates in leading national and international centres and networks. It also hosts three major research foundations: the Barcelona Science Park Foundation (PCB) — home to the Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB) and the Institute for Nanobioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC); the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS); and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL).
