University of Puerto Rico
Program content
- The Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona and the School of Law of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) have created a study program that leads, together, to obtaining the title of Graduate o Degree in Law, and Doctor of Jurisprudence.
- For UB students, the agreement offers a joint program of law studies that, through a validation system, allows the completion of the credits necessary to obtain the Juris Doctor degree at the UPR, with the possibility of taking the Bar exam in some US States.
- In order to obtain the double degree, students from the University of Barcelona must study for a year at the University of Puerto Rico, and then return to Barcelona to complete their studies at the UB. Only those students who have passed all the subjects enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico will be able to obtain the Double Degree.
NUMBER OF PLACES: The number of places is subject to criteria of balance and reciprocity of the number of students from both institutions participating in the program. The maximum is 10 places per academic year, as long as the required requirements are met.
Operation
- The subjects to be taken at the UPR are established in the program and some of them can be validated for subjects at the UB. Once the stay at the UPR is over, the student returns to Barcelona to complete the Law Degree.
- Once the subjects of the University of Puerto Rico and all the subjects of the UB Law Degree Study Plan are completed, two degrees are acquired: the UB Law Degree and the Juris Doctor of the UPR
- The registration will be formalized at the university of origin (a free one will be formalized at the university of destination, except for possible administrative fees).
- The costs of accommodation, transport, etc. are the responsibility of the student.
Requirements to participate
- Be enrolled in Law (Graduate) at the time of making the request.
- Have passed half of the credits to obtain the degree.
- Have a good academic record.
- Intermediate level of English (B1/B2)
Criteria for assigning available places
- Have an academic record with a minimum average grade equal to or higher than 7. Records with a lower average may be taken into consideration if other professional or academic merits relevant to the program are proven.
- Result of the personal interview. The aim of the interview is to get to know the motivations and aptitudes of the candidates better. Interviews will only be conducted with candidates who meet the requirements to participate in the program and when deemed necessary for the selection procedure.

Admission to the UPR
- In order to be admitted, it is necessary to provide a bank certification that accredits a provision of sufficient funds to cover the costs arising from the stay in Puerto Rico and subsequent return to Spain (you must have an income of approximately $20,000, which can be endorsed by a third party).
- The UPR will issue a letter of admission to UB students who have been accepted into the program, with which they can apply for an entry visa to Puerto Rico. These procedures must be done in person at the US Embassy in Spain, based in Madrid.
- Students will enroll at the UB at the end of July. Enrollment at the university of origin is mandatory, as is the hiring of insurance that covers the entire stay abroad.
- At the UPR, classes start in mid-August and end in early May. Exam periods are in December and May.
- Students who have passed all the subjects stipulated in the agreement at the UPR may request, at the end of the exchange, the validation of subjects with similar content to those offered at the UB. The Faculty of Law will decide if the student can incorporate the credits into his file.
