Miguel Angel Cañivano Salvador

Miguel Angel Cañivano Salvador has been an associate professor since 2003. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Barcelona (1991) and a PhD in Law (cum laude) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1996). He has served as secretary of the department of History of Law, Roman Law and State Ecclesiastical Law (2007-2011), and carried out research activity focusing on the law of religious liberty and the relations between the state and religious faiths. His publications cover a wide range of subjects from constitutional law (addressing the organic law of religious liberty and the organic nature of its precepts, 2012), administrative law (examining the regime on government involvement in the opening of religious centres, from state, regional and local perspectives, with special reference to Catalonia, 2015) and comparative civil law (looking at “covenant marriage” as an alternative to “no-fault divorce laws” and offering a reflection on the permanence of marriage bonds, 2002). He has spoken at the International Symposium of Canonical Law (addressing the competences of Spain’s autonomous communities in areas subject to canonical agreements, 2009). He has also been a speaker in courses delivered by the Barcelona Bar Association (e.g. in a course on canonical marriage law and in the master’s degree in family and inheritance law). He sits on the committee of external reviewers for two Spanish legal journals: the Revista General de Derecho Canónico y Derecho Eclesiástico del Estado and the Revista de Educación y Derecho. In the area of teaching, he not only gives classes in his own area of study in the bachelor’s degree in Law (Canonical Law; State and Religious Faiths), but also provides instruction in basic training subjects (covering techniques for work and communication, and the foundations of law). In addition, he takes part in teaching innovation projects (on the use of placement portfolios as a reflection and development tool in the acquisition of professional and personal competences, 2022). Lastly, he is the author of a number of publications aimed at professional practitioners of the law (e.g. “Legislación y Formularios Comentados de Derecho Matrimonial y Procesal Canónico”, 2002, co-written with Santiago Bueno).
