Information for UB students who want to follow the Double Degree Program at NSU:
Program content
The Double Degree program between the Shepard Broad Law Center of the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and the Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona (UB) allows students from both institutions to obtain the training to operate as lawyers in the systems North American and European-continental legal.
The program is divided into two phases. For UB students, these phases consist of:
- 1st phase: to participate it is necessary to have passed half the credits of the Degree in Law. This phase consists of an academic semester at NSU (August 15 – December 20, approx.). Total: 17 credits.
- 2nd phase: this period will take place after completing the studies at the UB, and includes three academic semesters. In total, the credits taken will not exceed 45. Passing the second part of the program will allow students who want to prepare for the BAR exam, to study an additional semester.
- NUMBER OF PLACES: The number of places is subject to criteria of balance and reciprocity of the number of students from both institutions participating in the program.
Operation
- The subjects to be taken at the NSU are established in the program and some of them can be validated for subjects at the UB.
- The registration will be formalized at the university of origin (a free one will be formalized at the university of destination, except for possible administrative fees).
- The costs of accommodation, transport, etc. are the responsibility of the student.
- The UB sets a registration fee of 1200 euros, as management costs, for students who participate in the 2nd period of the program.
- In order to obtain the Double Degree, students must pass all the subjects enrolled, in the two periods in which they complete their studies at NSU.
Requirements to participate
- Having passed half of the credits of the Degree in Law.
- Having passed half of the credits of the Degree or Degree in Law.
- Fluency in the English language, both spoken and written (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference -MECR-, and personal interview).
- Have a good academic record.
- Participate in and pass the two courses that NSU organizes at the UB (one face-to-face and the other online ) as an Introduction to the Law of USA Introduction to US Law Seminar
Criteria for assigning available places
- Have an academic record with a minimum average grade equal to or higher than 7. Records with a lower average may be taken into consideration if other professional or academic merits relevant to the program are proven.
- Result of the personal interview. The aim of the interview is to get to know the motivations and aptitudes of the candidates better. Only candidates who meet the requirements to participate in the program will be interviewed.
In order to obtain the Double Degree, students must pass all the subjects enrolled, in the two periods in which they complete their studies at NSU.
During the first period (August-December semester):
- Legal Studies Skills I (no convalidable)
- Lawyering Skills and Values I
- Contracts
- Torts
- Criminal Law
During the second period of the program, subjects determined by NSU will be studied, with the purpose of providing students with a broad understanding of American Law and preparing the bases for the Bar exam (College of Lawyers) in the US.
Application and Selection Procedure:
- The call for mobility to study abroad opens in November. From then on, the International Relations Office of the Faculty of Law will organize an information session for all those students interested in participating in the Double Degree Program.
- The selection of candidates will take place during the months of February and March. The academic record will be particularly valued, as well as the level of knowledge of English. Those applicants who are selected must also pass the two Introduction to US Law courses.
Admission process at NSU:
- NSU will issue a letter of admission to UB students accepted into the program, which will be used to process their entry visa to the USA. These procedures must be done in person at the US Embassy in Spain, based in Madrid.
- Students will enroll at the UB at the end of July.
- Enrollment at the university of origin is mandatory.
