Information for the student – Information and Documentation Sciences (extinction) (course curriculum 2010)

Introduction

Students of the bachelor's degree in Information and Documentation Sciences acquire the skills and training required to work in a wide range of professional spheres, since information is omnipresent and exists in numerous forms in the twenty-first century. Many are surprised when they learn about the degree in Information and Documentation Sciences because they automatically associate it with librarians and documentalists, about whom they hold outmoded views. Yet in today's information society, professionals in this sector work in very diverse areas, most of which are clearly related to the digital world.

The Faculty introduced the bachelor's degree in Information and Documentation Sciences in the academic year 2009-2010, following approval by the UB's Governing Council and verification by ANECA.

The degree consists of 240 credits, of which 60 correspond to basic training subjects and the remainder provide students with the knowledge and competences required to work in a range of information management areas.

The bachelor's degree in Information and Documentation Sciences pursues the following learning objectives:

To acquire specialist training in the design, management and evaluation of information services in line with the needs of a geographic, virtual or organizational community.
To perform the specific competences of gathering, selecting, organizing, preserving and disseminating information and documentation through the application of technologies.
To develop the communication skills required to link users and documents as well as the resource management competences to ensure the quality of information services.
To acquire training as a professional with an open mind to change who is able to adapt to professional environments characterized by constant innovation of processes and tools and to prove the strategic value of information and documentation in all kinds of organizations.

As part of their studies, students are offered various mobility options (Erasmus, SICUE, CINDA, summer placements, stays abroad) and paid non-curricular placement options in order to gain experience in different professional areas. The course also provides general training that may subsequently be complemented with different master's degrees taught at the Faculty in several specialized fields.
