Information for the student – History and Identities in the Western Mediterranean (15th-19th Centuries)
Introduction
The master's degree in History and Identities in the Western Mediterranean (15th-19th Centuries) aims to train specialists in the historical evolution and configuration of societal identities in the Western Mediterranean during the modern age. It focuses on in-depth analysis of a set of complex processes (formation of states, international relations and the dynamics of society, culture and ethnicity) that took place during this period of history and played a role in the configuration of Europe and its internal relationships and dealings with neighbouring territories, such as the complex interactions with the Maghreb.
The knowledge acquired over the course of the degree allows for a better understanding of the problems encountered in the political construction of the European Union, such as reciprocal limits of sovereignty between the various members, the harmonization of organizations with different cultural and historical traditions, and the need to find a common ideological foundation that respects the identities of all member countries.
The master's degree is mainly geared toward research, preparing students for doctoral study. At the same time, it has evident professional applications in a range of broad sectors such as education, archiving, museology, publishing, culture and heritage management and intercultural management (the latter of these areas are highly significant in the current political and cultural context of EU relations with the Mediterranean region and the Maghreb.
