ENGAGING WITH SCIENCE FOR POLICY
Speaker: Marco Masia (enihilo.com)
Schedule: 2 days (4 sessions, 3h per session)
Format: In person. Seminar Pere Pascual, Facultat de Física
Language: English
When: 27, 28 January 2025, from 9h to 17h
Interested students must register. Deadline: January 22, 2025 Registration form
Course program:
Policy challenges in the 21st century are interconnected and complex. The amount of information needed to make an informed decision that adequately considers policy options is increasing and subsequently a broad range of scientific evidence is required to deal with them. This workshop aims to provide researchers with a practical training on how they can effectively provide information and science advice to policymakers.
OUTLINE:
· Introduction
· Political landscape
· National and European scientific advice systems
· Case study
· Science for policy skills
· Effective communication
· Role play
The workshop will use participatory and interactive exercises that enable participants to engage with the content in a contextualised and memorable way. Each exercise will also be followed by a short debrief to discuss the challenges and learning outcomes of the exercise. This not only gives participants time to analyse and understand the key messages but also hear the perspectives of their peers and view the exercise from another angle.

Course on "Git for scientific projects: manage your code and work in teams"
Lecturer: Dimitri Marinelli, “Maria Zambrano” Pot-doc at UBICS
When: June 20, 2023, 11h -13h
Place: Aula Seminari Pere Pascual (5.07)
Number of places: 25

Abstract:
Collaboration is a fundamental aspect of coding in modern scientific research, and even in the unlikely case that you are the only one to look at your code, you will have the need to go back to older versions or to experiment on something without affecting the version that works already, but does not have that extra feature yet.
In today's world, 'git' has become the go-to tool for managing the history of your code, and more. In the first hour, I will explain the benefits of using 'git', what makes it valuable, and how online services like Github and Gitlab can assist in preserving your code and collaborating in teams. I will only cover a few key concepts that will allow you to easily apply version control to your code.
Then, in the second hour, for those interested and want to try, we will have a hands-on session where we try 'git' and use it on your code or on some examples I will provide.
Participants should bring their laptops to the session.
Note:
If the number of places is exceeded, the order of registration will be respected.
If demand is high, another session will be held and those affected will be informed.
