Information for the student – Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage (extinction)

The main objective of the Bachelor’s Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage is to produce competent, qualified professionals who have the skills needed to carry out actions required to conserve the works that make up our cultural heritage so they can be passed on to future generations.

The training students receive on this course offers a balance of theory, practice, and technical and scientific content. The aim is to enable them to develop the skills and capabilities required to carry out professional activities in this field. Specifically, graduates must have a good knowledge of cultural goods and be able to examine such items and perform diagnostic evaluation, take any steps required for their preventive and curative conservation, or restoration, and document the processes and treatments applied.

Generic competences of the degree

• Awareness of a universal idea of cultural heritage, its singularity and fragility and the need to safeguard this heritage for future generations, as well as the responsibility of the curator-restorer.
• Capacity to develop sensitivity and manual skills.
• Ability to recognize and apply the principles and obligations of the code of professional ethics in the field of conservation-restoration.

Specific competences of the degree

• Ability to examine cultural assets and assess their state of conservation, to establish a protocol for analytical studies and to use appropriate instruments and methods.
• Knowledge of and identification of the physical, chemical, biological and geological properties associated with cultural assets and their conservation-restoration, using the means and the resources of the scientific method.
• Ability to draw up a proposal for the conservation-restoration of cultural assets and to critically interpret the results of an examination of these. To select a specific treatment, develop a method for applying it and estimate the resources needed for its implementation.
• Ability to apply conservation-restoration treatments to cultural assets and to continuously assess the outcome.
• Ability to identify and evaluate the factors, systems and processes of alteration and deterioration of cultural assets and to develop a preventive conservation plan.
• Ability to document different stages in the conservation-restoration of cultural assets, including examination, diagnosis, proposals for action and treatments.
• Knowledge of the vocabulary and the legal and regulatory material that governs the profession of conservation-restoration and the institutions and organizations that are involved in art, culture and heritage.
• Capacity to recognize the range of cultural assets, the raw materials used in these and their combinations. To be able to work on processes, procedures and artistic techniques, using the technologies that are specific to this field.
• Ability to recognize the aesthetic, cultural, documentary, historic and social qualities of cultural assets and their development over time.
• Ability to identify, understand and assess the thought procedures of artists through their work and texts.
