Information for the student – Design (extinction)
Objectives and competences
Objectives
The main objective of the bachelor’s degree, which does not include specializations (although the last courses have a wide range of optional subjects), consists of acquiring an integrated foundation for professional practice as a designer. Students acquire the skills to work on the planning, development, production and dissemination of material and visual culture in different social, cultural, aesthetic and economic contexts.
Therefore, the objectives for the degree are chiefly the following:
- To develop the knowledge and skills required to become experts in design who can deal with all technical aspects of the process, from the initial conception of an object to its production and distribution.
- To develop into professionals who are able to perform their occupational tasks successfully in accordance with the specific requirements of the profession, and who have sufficient expertise to perform different types of work in the design sector and find employment in current and future labour markets.
- To engage with and participate in international trends in design research, developing a foundation of knowledge that will enable the student to undertake advanced and specialized training at a higher level and meet needs associated with emerging occupations in the sector.
Competences
- Capacity to develop a design process coherently.
- Ability to respond appropriately to a set of data and requirements through a design. Ability to analyse data and to summarize them formally.
- Capacity to apply knowledge to practice, to manage the image of the entire design, to propose and defend a design concept and to develop it until it can be put into practice and manufactured.
- Capacity to identify problems that can be solved by design, to approach these as design problems, to obtain the data required to develop a project, to propose a design concept and to decide on criteria for implementing it, to choose materials and building materials that are suitable for each case, to know how to communicate with technicians and other professionals involved in the process.
- Knowledge of the research methods that are relevant to design, in order to apply and develop them.
