Information for the student – Fine Arts (extinction)

The objectives for the Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts are closely linked to the needs and demands of present-day society. As well as developing professional skills, the emphasis is on training students to relate personal skills, the needs of the environment, and the sensitive structuring of social harmony through critical attitudes underpinned by a sense of meaning. We believe the ultimate aim of the course is to train creators who are proficient in the visual, plastic and allied arts, and who have a strong background in art and visual culture. The overall goal is to develop the ability of students to offer creative and innovative solutions to new realities that emerge in 21st-century societies.

The general objectives for the degree are:

1. To work with the tools required for students to integrate their knowledge in creative and experimental processes – both within and across disciplines – so they are able to engage in artistic and cultural practices in a range of formats and settings.
2. To enable students to develop the skills required to undertake professional artistic or creative practices that allow them to engage with contemporary reality and receive full social recognition for their skills.
3. To ensure that students have the knowledge and skills required to undertake further study at postgraduate level, in Spain or elsewhere in Europe.
4. To facilitate the development of a commitment to fundamental rights and gender equality, the principles of equal opportunity and universal access for people with disabilities, the values that underpin a culture of peace, and democratic values.

The competences developed in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts are divided into three blocks: UB generic competences, degree-specific generic competences, and other degree-specific competences.

— The UB generic competences are:

• Development of commitment to ethical practice.
• Capacity for learning and responsibility.
• Teamwork skills.
• Creative and entrepreneurial skills.
• Communication skills.
• Development of sensitivity towards sustainability.

— The degree-specific generic competences are:

• Knowledge of the vocabulary, codes and concepts of the arts.
• Familiarity with and ability to use information and communication technologies (ICT).
• Ability to use convergent and divergent thinking in research processes.
• Knowledge of the processes involved in academic work.

— Degree-specific competences are the knowledge and skills that students enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts must acquire to become creators or art professionals:

• Knowledge of vocabulary, codes and concepts, production and post-production methods, and multidisciplinary processes that can be applied to artistic projects.
• Ability to understand artistic discourses.
• Knowledge of systems for creation and associated techniques and technologies, materials, tools and processes that can be used to develop and determine systems for presenting works and art interventions.
• Ability to understand issues related to the arts and engage with such issues within specific social and cultural contexts.
• Basic knowledge of cultural management as it relates to artistic activity.
• Critical understanding of artistic discourses; the evolution of cultural, social, aesthetic and economic values; and the social impact of art.
