The physics behind cellular shape, motion and death

Functions of living cells such as migration, division, stemness or death have traditionally been understood in terms of biochemical reactions. I will present evidence showing that the regulation of each of these functions is also driven and regulated by physical forces. I will discuss how we measure these forces and how we apply theoretical frameworks based on active matter physics to understand cell mechanics. I will illustrate mechanical regulation of cell function using intestinal organoids. Finally, I will present how abnormal mechanics drives cancer progression.
