Abstract

Women's work was crucial in ensuring the viability of small Catalan peasant farms throughout the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. In this sense, throughout the article (Historia Agraria, 93, pp. 1-31) the different jobs carried out by peasant women on their own family farms and the tasks for which they were hired as day labourers in the period 1850-1930 are determined, as well as the organisation of work in gangs. Next, the volume of contracted female agricultural work is analysed in relation to the employed male work, as well as the seasonality of the work carried out by day labourers. New salary series are also established and the wage gap between male and female wages is calculated in various Catalan regions. Finally, the factors that help to explain the wage differences that have been detected between the regions studied are identified.
