Abstract
As opposed to orthodox economics, ecological economics sees the economy as an open and embedded system, explicitly studying the exchange between the economy and the environment. It is inherently concerned with the scale of the economy, recognizing its energy and material implications, and scrutinizes the concept of perpetual economic growth. Its macroeconomic branch mainly develops a new class of dynamic simulation models that allow to analyze policy implications for the sustainability transition of the economic system. Thus, in the context of climate and other environmental crises, ecological economics provides a more holistic and apt approach to address the fundamental issues our society faces.

Speaker
Till Heydenreich is a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). His background is in economics and environmental economics, having studied in Cologne and Copenhagen. His research interests include ecological macroeconomics and policies for an equitable low-carbon transition. His research encompasses analysing interrelations of environmental impacts and inequality using dynamic simulation models and input-output analysis.
