The Ecology Section derives from the Department of Ecology of the University of Barcelona, founded in 1967 by Dr. Ramon Margalef López, the first Professor of Ecology and the first Department of Ecology in Spain. Its members have developed their research mainly in the ecology of aquatic systems, both continental and marine, and in forest ecology.
