Wastewater makes it possible to study the viruses that circulate in a given community anonymously and with a low cost-benefit in a populational way. As a result of the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, epidemiological surveillance programs based on the use of wastewater (wastewater-based epidemiology -WBE) have been applied in multiple countries. However, this tool is not new nor is it restricted to the study of SARS-CoV-2 presenting great potential for the study of multiple infectious diseases.
